Did you know? In 1824, Commissioners directed by the Tennessee State Legislature chose a site near the center of Tipton County upon a commanding hill with a large spring flowing from its base located upon the lands of Tyree Rodes, John C. McLemore and James Vaulx as the county seat. The new town was named “Covington” in honor of General Leonard Wales Covington who was mortally wounded in the battle of Chrysler’s Field on 11 November 1813 and died two days later.
