Reviewing family law in Tennessee for MemphisDivorce.com was a special experience. The traditional issues in family law, such as custody, child support, and alimony, all continue to develop over time at an ever-increasing pace. The increased support for mediation is an important trend that should continue. The required expertise for competent family law representation includes business law, trial advocacy, real estate law, negotiation, pension law, investigation, complex asset valuation, and tax law. These areas do not get any easier year by year. The challenge to zealously represent clients in this changing legal environment requires a special devotion. In my opinion, no other area of practice offers such a great challenge or reward. Helping clients achieve successful results through some of the most difficult and trying times is a wonderful vocation.
Thank you to my wife, Sharon. She has always offered sound advice and support from the minute we first discussed my applying to law school. Sharon has endured the long hours at the office preparing for court, the late night phone calls from clients, and the many absences for out-of-town trials and seminars. She also encouraged me to become a mediator. Finally, bringing our children, Anne and Miles, Jr., into this world was the greatest gift imaginable. My life changed forever. Her smile makes life worth living.
I must also thank my clients and colleagues, who have offered so much confidence. Without their continued support, we would not be able to practice law as successfully as we do. Alan Crone continues to teach me about friendship and partnership. Special thanks to Jim Webb, whose editing of this web site was exemplary, as usual. Also, extraordinary mention must be made of the late Judge Joe B. Jones, my father-in-law, who mentored me early in my career. He taught me that success in the courtroom begins with an uncompromised commitment and dedication to preparation. Judge Jones also shared his love of the law and taught me many important lessons, both in and out of the courtroom, that are not written in any book.
