A very important factor in determining both spousal and child support includes the ability of the supported spouse to earn money to contribute toward his or her own living expenses. If the supported spouse has not been working, there may be no track record from which to gauge a realistic expectation of earnings. A vocational expert or career counselor can provide the court with an expert opinion about the supported spouse's possible employment, need for education or training, the job market, and potential earnings. Some courts may give considerable weight to such testimony. The process by which the evaluator gains this information is called a "vocational evaluation." A "vocational evaluation" is not a method for the diagnosis or treatment of psychological problems. It also is not career counseling, like job development or job placement. No one can "fail" a vocational evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to identify strengths, interests and personality, work values, and transferable work skills.
The American Board of Vocational Experts is a professional credentialing body established as a not-for-profit organization. Its Diplomates and Fellows have academic preparation in several disciplines (rehabilitation, psychology, economics and various aligned disciplines) and in assessment, counseling and consulting. The ABVE Code of Ethics can be found here.
